About Longines

Compagnie des Mondres Longines, Francillon S.A., better known simply as Longines, is currently based in Saint-Imier, Switzerland. The region was known locally as Les Longines, meaning “long meadows,” which gave the brand its name.
Started in 1832, the brand was started by Auguste Agassiz. Early partners included lawyers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. They eventually left in 1846, leaving Agassiz solely in charge of the company. He later recruited his nephew, who helped develop the crown-wound pocket watch, illuminating the need for a winding key.
In 1867, Longines opened its first factory, manufacturing watches under one roof, making it the world's first watch trademark to assemble watches under one roof. In the same year, they also produced their first in-house movement, the caliber 20A.
They then developed their first in-house chronograph, the caliber 20H. A mono-pusher chronograph set into the crown, this caliber began Longines' involvement in sports timing, particularly equestrian sports, which it continues to be involved with today.
The 20th century proved productive for Longines. In 1927, it produced one of the first wrist watches, a 48mm wide pilot's watch with P.V.H. Weems. In 1953, Longines produced its first quartz caliber. Prior to 1971, it produced a number of calibers, including some of the earliest wrist-worn chronograph movements.
